Opening Odessa, Texas thread, circa Ep. #2

“Aaron, hey, I’m putting together a video for homecoming. Want to say a few words?” Zach asked, lifting his camera to back up his statement.

“Sure,” Aaron said, standing. Zach prepped the camera, switching it on and focusing on the boy in front of him. “Let me just start by saying what an awesome year this has been, and how gnarly—”

“Gnarly?” the girl seated on the ground said with a laugh. “Who says that anymore?”

“Hey, if you watch Jay and Silent Bob –” Aaron began to argue.

Smiling at their banter, it quickly changed to a frown as Zach saw something in the viewing screen just off to the right behind the tree that Aaron was standing in front of. Curious, Zach zoomed in on the object. The picture shook violently in his hands. But he was certain, it was a police car. And there was somebody getting out of it, heading for the main entrance of the school. Zach closed the screen on the camera and switched it off.

“Zach, man, what are you doing? I wasn’t finished!” Aaron protested.

“Mind my stuff,” Zach said, lowering his backpack and placing the camera down beside it.

Racing towards the hedges, keeping low so he wouldn’t be spotted, Zach headed towards the front pathway straining to overhear the conversation between the sheriff and the other uniformed man that accompanied him. They were looking for a cheerleader – one with Union Well High’s school uniform – who had been at the site of the train wreck. Claire. He had to warn her. And it was then that he remembered the tape.

Rushing back to his backpack he discovered that, although he had told Aaron and his girlfriend to watch it, they had long abandoned his gear at the sound of the bell. A little irritated, Zach glanced around quickly before picking up his belongings and racing towards the quadrangle. He placed his camera into his backpack, but the thought suddenly occurred to him that he still had Claire’s tape, or at least he thought he did. Rummaging through his bag as he rushed through the crowd of students, he became more fretful at the disappearance of the tape. He was so immersed in his search he ran into a fellow student, turning to round them as he continued to pat his bag down. Nothing. Glancing up he saw that the lockers were ahead of him. Dashing around the other students as if he were a skilled football player weaving between his opponents, Zach reached his locker and fumbled with the combination before yanking it open. He noticed he had passed Claire, but he wanted to find the tape before he bothered her about it. His hands flicked through the folders, papers and books that lined the top of his locker. It wasn’t hidden there. Time to panic. Unless Claire has it.

“Claire,” he said softly, rounding her and hoping maybe Jackie and Brody didn’t hear him. He waved a hand at her, indicating she should pull herself away from the others. “May I borrow your ear just for a minute?”

“Hey, Zach!” Jackie piped up, following them Dammit, go away! “Is it true you got an erection in the boy’s locker room?”

Zach narrowed his eyes on the attention-seeking blonde cheerleader. No doubt she had made the story up herself. It was easier to look more popular when you brought down those around you. Giving a bitter smile, he nodded his head, showing her that her attempt at humour was not appreciated. Hurriedly he pulled Claire’s arm, trying to get her away from the others.

“It’s really urgent,” Zach insisted, but Claire’s friends seemed determined to keep her company. “Really”

Zach sighed with defeat, letting Claire go as the principal approached her. It was too late. He didn’t get to tell her that her secret might be out. But how could he when it was so hard to get her alone?

Claire rolled her eyes at Jackie's comment, but restrained herself from saying a nasty comment in retaliation. She let Zach pull her away, but then she saw that the Principal was coming towards her. Her eyes went wide and she looked over at Zach, "Uh oh."

Claire mouthed "I'm sorry, meet me later," to Zach as the principal dragged her and Jackie off. She felt horrible that she couldn't stay and talk to Zach and hear what he had to say, but the Principal would wait for no one.

The Principal had rounded up all the cheerleaders and was discussing the incident yesterday with the train. He wanted to know who had saved that man and Claire's palms started to sweat. What was she going to do? No one else would say yes to it because no one knew what happened, she started to open her mouth to speak, when Jackie stepped forward and took the credit.

Claire stared at the girl, in shock that the girl had even said that and took the credit. What in the world was she up to? Did Jackie know she had actually done it? Her head was swimming in ideas, but thankfully they were all dismissed. Claire placed a hand on her forehead as she walked off, heading towards the football fields, hoping to find Zach.

The rest of the afternoon Zach could hardly concentrate on his schoolwork. All the classes he had didn’t have Claire in them, although there was one she was meant to be in but she didn’t show. Zach stared across at the empty desk, his hands clasped. He kept glancing there so frequently that he started thinking he was going a little insane. She wasn’t going to suddenly appear in her chair like a witch or some space traveller from Star Trek. She had one power, that was it. And regeneration wasn’t transportation.

His eyes crossed the room and he noticed Jackie was also missing. Must have something to do with the principal calling them earlier. Maybe they’re in a line-up – a POLICE line-up! She could be in all sorts of trouble.

His anxiety was free to be let loose at the sound of the bell. School was out. But Zach didn’t care about going home, he cared about finding Claire. Overhearing Brody bragging about the new moves he was going to try out during football practice, Zach realised cheerleading practice must be on also. After all, the big game was coming up soon. He raced towards the football field, arriving just in time to see Claire walk onto the grass.

“Claire!” he shouted, picking up speed until he matched her stride for stride. Although he was panicked, he could tell she was annoyed about something, her walking pace was rather fast as he walked alongside her. “I’m glad I finally got you alone. Look, we have to talk.”

Claire heard her name being shouted from behind her and prayed that it wasn't Brady or Jackie or anyone. She turned her head to see Zach and gave a sigh of relief. She chuckled slightly at his comment about having to talk, "Oh boy do we have to talk."

"The Police were here, they knew it was a cheerleader that got that man out of the fire yesterday. They wanted us to come forth and tell them which one of us it was. And guess who took the credit! Jackie!" She spat the girl's name out with annoyance thick in her voice as she looked over at Zach.
Zach (Thomas Dekker): cameracrossifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 02:16 am (UTC)
Zach stopped as he heard her agree that they needed to talk. Great, she does know what’s going on, he thought with relief, but as he heard her mention Jackie he shook his head and chased after her. No, she doesn’t.

“Look, it’s about the video tape,” he said urgently. Seeing she was obviously still distracted with thoughts of Jackie, Zach attempted to explain further. He had to make her realise how important this was, how serious her situation had become. He gritted his teeth, trying to keep his voice low so he wouldn’t shout at her about their little secret and risk exposing her ability. “The video tape! The tape where you’re like killing yourself like twenty times!”

Zach was completely right, she was caught up in her own thoughts, and then what he was saying finally hit her. She stopped in her tracks and stared at him, "What? What in the world are you talking about? Just forget about the tape okay? And keep it all under wraps."
Zach (Thomas Dekker): watch her goifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 02:33 am (UTC)
Keep it under wraps? KEEP IT UNDER WRAPS?

“That’s what I’m trying to tell you!” he said, grabbing her, making her face him so he could actually talk to her about this and not have to keep yelling at her from behind. “It was in my backpack and now it’s not.”

Oh man, she looks pissed. He wet his lips, averting his eyes. A sudden sense of guilt washed over him. She had every right to be angry with him. It was his responsibility to look after that tape and now it had disappeared.

“It’s gone,” he said quietly.
invinciblecheer on November 2nd, 2006 02:40 am (UTC)
"GONE?! What do you mean it's gone?! How could you lose something like that Zach?" Claire was definitely pissed. This was the last thing in the world she needed to happen. She sure as hell didn't need the Police finding that tape and coming back to her about it. She just wanted to be normal!

She glared at him, "Well, you better find it! I can't believe you lost it!" She shook her head in disbelief and then suddenly felt a body slam into hers. It felt like a train and the ground felt even worse as she flew through the air and landed on the grass.
Zach (Thomas Dekker): Friendsifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 02:58 am (UTC)
Claire’s rage was something to be feared. Zach thought he’d never seen her so angry the whole time he’d known her. But she did have something to be furious about, it wasn’t like she’d broken a nail or been turned down for a Homecoming date or anything.

Before he had a chance to open his mouth to defend himself, Brody suddenly stole her away from him again. One minute she was there, the next she wasn’t. Of all things, the teenager in the hulking football gear had tackled Claire and flattened her onto the grass a few feet away. Zach raised his hands to cover his open mouth as he saw the blur of red go by. Following the path of the falling bodies, he stared in open-mouthed horror as he saw Claire’s head had done a complete Linda Blair – it had twisted until it faced the other side of her body. Lifting her neck with a slight crunch, he saw her turn it back the correct way. It was something out of some freakish horror movie, he was sure. How can she do that? But she had survived numerous other times, wouldn’t this just be another? The only problem was she’d done it in front of an entire sports field filled with people. Brody raced over to help her to her feet. Quickly Zach looked back to the rest of the football team, wondering if they’d seen anything. As Claire declared herself okay, he checked again to make sure they’d bought it. Seeing that they had and they all began to go back to their practice sessions, Zach sighed with relief as he saw Claire head towards him again.

Claire couldn't believe that tackle had caused her to twist her head around. She was so thankful for her powers and twisted her head the right way. She then realised she was laying on her back in the middle of the football field and silently cursed in her head.

Brody held a hand out to her and lifted her back up, she dusted herself off, and thanked him. She tried to reassure him that she was okay and finally he walked off. She looked over at Zach and grabbed his hand, "We are looking for it now!"
Zach (Thomas Dekker): bikecrouchifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 03:27 am (UTC)
He looked down at her hand in his and then back up to her. Before he could even think about the possibilities she was yanking him forward, away from the football field and the many questioning eyes of the football team and cheerleading squad.

“But… what about cheerleading practice?” he asked. It was a stupid question, just tumbling out of his mouth. Of course he wanted her to look for the tape with him, but he didn’t want her missing out on her life for it. This was his fault. If anyone had to find it, it was him.

“Claire, stop,” he said, digging his heels in and trying to bring her to a halt. “Where are we going? I don’t even know where to look.”
invinciblecheer on November 2nd, 2006 03:34 am (UTC)
"I have to find this tape Zach, it's my life. If this gets out then I'm going to become the freak. I don't want that," She looked at him sadly. She just wanted to be normal and she wanted to find this tape.

"I don't know where to look either, but just looking around would be a good idea. I mean maybe it just fell and someone picked it up? I don't know Zach, I just want to find it," She chewed on her bottom lip as she spoke.
Zach (Thomas Dekker): Wantedifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 09:17 am (UTC)
“I know. I know, and I’m sorry,” Zach apologised. “I really thought it was still in my backpack.”

He could see how worried she was. If anyone saw what was on that tape, it could risk exposing everything. But he had no way to explain what had happened, and it was unlikely to have just ‘fallen out’ as Claire was suggesting. He knew she was grabbing at explanations, just like he had been, out of desperation.

“I know. I just can’t remember when I last saw it. I mean, I checked all through my backpack, and I looked in my locker.” He didn’t know where else it could be, and he looked around helplessly as if he expected it to appear right in front of them. “I’ve still got my camera. I was taping footage for Homecoming this morning. I used a different tape because I knew that tape was important to you and you didn’t want it erased or whatever. Are you sure I didn’t give it to you? Because the only time I left my bag this morning was when I went to see what the sheriff was doing here. And I doubt Aaron or Christine would have stolen it, I wasn’t gone that long and they had no reason to look through my stuff.”
invinciblecheer on November 2nd, 2006 05:30 pm (UTC)
"No, you didn't give it to me. I would have remembered if you gave it to me. What if we lost it a few days ago after we taped it or something? I mean, you can't remember when you last had it, what if it fell out yesterday?" Claire was really worried about what in the world had happened to this tape, she had no clue where it could be.

She held onto his hand as they walked off the field and headed around the parimeter of the school, "I just really want to find it."
Zach (Thomas Dekker): shrugifilmdeadpeople on November 3rd, 2006 05:20 am (UTC)
“I didn’t lose it after that. I couldn’t. It was in my camera. And I still have my camera don’t I?” he said, lifting his eyebrows. Of course she hadn’t seen that, it was still in his bag, but if she wanted him to pull it out to prove it he would. “And it was in my backpack today. At least I thought it was. I haven’t pulled anything out of my bag since the day of the train wreck.” He stopped, looking rather abashed. “Apart from homework, I mean.”

Claire appeared rather adamant that it had fallen out, but Zach knew it couldn’t be so. Not when he kept his bag with him the whole time. Not when it was zipped closed. Not when he checked it a hundred times a day to ensure his camera was still in it. But why hadn’t he seen Claire’s tape? Where had it gone?

“It didn’t fall out. I don’t want to lose my camera, Claire. Do you really think I’d be that careless to leave it unzipped?”

With her hand fastened around his again whilst she led him around the perimeter of the school, Zach again found it hard to concentrate on what he remembered. She’s holding my hand. I can’t believe she’s holding my hand. She wouldn’t even ride my bike a few days ago.

“Maybe we should head around the front,” he suggested. “That’s the first time I noticed it was gone.”
