Opening Odessa, Texas thread, circa Ep. #2

“Aaron, hey, I’m putting together a video for homecoming. Want to say a few words?” Zach asked, lifting his camera to back up his statement.

“Sure,” Aaron said, standing. Zach prepped the camera, switching it on and focusing on the boy in front of him. “Let me just start by saying what an awesome year this has been, and how gnarly—”

“Gnarly?” the girl seated on the ground said with a laugh. “Who says that anymore?”

“Hey, if you watch Jay and Silent Bob –” Aaron began to argue.

Smiling at their banter, it quickly changed to a frown as Zach saw something in the viewing screen just off to the right behind the tree that Aaron was standing in front of. Curious, Zach zoomed in on the object. The picture shook violently in his hands. But he was certain, it was a police car. And there was somebody getting out of it, heading for the main entrance of the school. Zach closed the screen on the camera and switched it off.

“Zach, man, what are you doing? I wasn’t finished!” Aaron protested.

“Mind my stuff,” Zach said, lowering his backpack and placing the camera down beside it.

Racing towards the hedges, keeping low so he wouldn’t be spotted, Zach headed towards the front pathway straining to overhear the conversation between the sheriff and the other uniformed man that accompanied him. They were looking for a cheerleader – one with Union Well High’s school uniform – who had been at the site of the train wreck. Claire. He had to warn her. And it was then that he remembered the tape.

Rushing back to his backpack he discovered that, although he had told Aaron and his girlfriend to watch it, they had long abandoned his gear at the sound of the bell. A little irritated, Zach glanced around quickly before picking up his belongings and racing towards the quadrangle. He placed his camera into his backpack, but the thought suddenly occurred to him that he still had Claire’s tape, or at least he thought he did. Rummaging through his bag as he rushed through the crowd of students, he became more fretful at the disappearance of the tape. He was so immersed in his search he ran into a fellow student, turning to round them as he continued to pat his bag down. Nothing. Glancing up he saw that the lockers were ahead of him. Dashing around the other students as if he were a skilled football player weaving between his opponents, Zach reached his locker and fumbled with the combination before yanking it open. He noticed he had passed Claire, but he wanted to find the tape before he bothered her about it. His hands flicked through the folders, papers and books that lined the top of his locker. It wasn’t hidden there. Time to panic. Unless Claire has it.

“Claire,” he said softly, rounding her and hoping maybe Jackie and Brody didn’t hear him. He waved a hand at her, indicating she should pull herself away from the others. “May I borrow your ear just for a minute?”

Claire wanted everything to be back to normal, especially after she saved that man from the train. She was doing her best not to mention it to anyone and play it off as if she had seen it on the news.

She was walking down the hallway when Brody came up to her, her cheeks flushed at the idea of him talking to her, and they stopped by the lockers to talk. Soon enough Jackie came over to join them. Why Jackie always had to be around Brody she didn't understand, but she was so tempted to just walk away from the conversation.

She heard a voice behind her calling her name, was that Zach? Then a hand was waved in front of her and a question posed. She was definitely alright when him taking her away and gave Brody and Jackie her best fake smile, "I'll talk to y'all later."

She quickly turned around, making a face at Zach to indicate her annoyance and started to walk off, wanting Zach beside her. "What do you need?" She hissed quietly not wanting to talk any louder until they were far away from Jackie, since that girl had the biggest mouth in the whole school.

“Hey, Zach!” Jackie piped up, following them Dammit, go away! “Is it true you got an erection in the boy’s locker room?”

Zach narrowed his eyes on the attention-seeking blonde cheerleader. No doubt she had made the story up herself. It was easier to look more popular when you brought down those around you. Giving a bitter smile, he nodded his head, showing her that her attempt at humour was not appreciated. Hurriedly he pulled Claire’s arm, trying to get her away from the others.

“It’s really urgent,” Zach insisted, but Claire’s friends seemed determined to keep her company. “Really”

Zach sighed with defeat, letting Claire go as the principal approached her. It was too late. He didn’t get to tell her that her secret might be out. But how could he when it was so hard to get her alone?

Claire rolled her eyes at Jackie's comment, but restrained herself from saying a nasty comment in retaliation. She let Zach pull her away, but then she saw that the Principal was coming towards her. Her eyes went wide and she looked over at Zach, "Uh oh."

Claire mouthed "I'm sorry, meet me later," to Zach as the principal dragged her and Jackie off. She felt horrible that she couldn't stay and talk to Zach and hear what he had to say, but the Principal would wait for no one.

The Principal had rounded up all the cheerleaders and was discussing the incident yesterday with the train. He wanted to know who had saved that man and Claire's palms started to sweat. What was she going to do? No one else would say yes to it because no one knew what happened, she started to open her mouth to speak, when Jackie stepped forward and took the credit.

Claire stared at the girl, in shock that the girl had even said that and took the credit. What in the world was she up to? Did Jackie know she had actually done it? Her head was swimming in ideas, but thankfully they were all dismissed. Claire placed a hand on her forehead as she walked off, heading towards the football fields, hoping to find Zach.

The rest of the afternoon Zach could hardly concentrate on his schoolwork. All the classes he had didn’t have Claire in them, although there was one she was meant to be in but she didn’t show. Zach stared across at the empty desk, his hands clasped. He kept glancing there so frequently that he started thinking he was going a little insane. She wasn’t going to suddenly appear in her chair like a witch or some space traveller from Star Trek. She had one power, that was it. And regeneration wasn’t transportation.

His eyes crossed the room and he noticed Jackie was also missing. Must have something to do with the principal calling them earlier. Maybe they’re in a line-up – a POLICE line-up! She could be in all sorts of trouble.

His anxiety was free to be let loose at the sound of the bell. School was out. But Zach didn’t care about going home, he cared about finding Claire. Overhearing Brody bragging about the new moves he was going to try out during football practice, Zach realised cheerleading practice must be on also. After all, the big game was coming up soon. He raced towards the football field, arriving just in time to see Claire walk onto the grass.

“Claire!” he shouted, picking up speed until he matched her stride for stride. Although he was panicked, he could tell she was annoyed about something, her walking pace was rather fast as he walked alongside her. “I’m glad I finally got you alone. Look, we have to talk.”

Claire heard her name being shouted from behind her and prayed that it wasn't Brady or Jackie or anyone. She turned her head to see Zach and gave a sigh of relief. She chuckled slightly at his comment about having to talk, "Oh boy do we have to talk."

"The Police were here, they knew it was a cheerleader that got that man out of the fire yesterday. They wanted us to come forth and tell them which one of us it was. And guess who took the credit! Jackie!" She spat the girl's name out with annoyance thick in her voice as she looked over at Zach.
Zach (Thomas Dekker): cameracrossifilmdeadpeople on November 2nd, 2006 02:16 am (UTC)
Zach stopped as he heard her agree that they needed to talk. Great, she does know what’s going on, he thought with relief, but as he heard her mention Jackie he shook his head and chased after her. No, she doesn’t.

“Look, it’s about the video tape,” he said urgently. Seeing she was obviously still distracted with thoughts of Jackie, Zach attempted to explain further. He had to make her realise how important this was, how serious her situation had become. He gritted his teeth, trying to keep his voice low so he wouldn’t shout at her about their little secret and risk exposing her ability. “The video tape! The tape where you’re like killing yourself like twenty times!”

Zach was completely right, she was caught up in her own thoughts, and then what he was saying finally hit her. She stopped in her tracks and stared at him, "What? What in the world are you talking about? Just forget about the tape okay? And keep it all under wraps."

Keep it under wraps? KEEP IT UNDER WRAPS?

“That’s what I’m trying to tell you!” he said, grabbing her, making her face him so he could actually talk to her about this and not have to keep yelling at her from behind. “It was in my backpack and now it’s not.”

Oh man, she looks pissed. He wet his lips, averting his eyes. A sudden sense of guilt washed over him. She had every right to be angry with him. It was his responsibility to look after that tape and now it had disappeared.

“It’s gone,” he said quietly.

"I don't think he had it otherwise he would have just singled me out and not gathered up the whole squad. I mean they would have pulled me aside or something and not let Jackie take all the credit," She wasn't really paying attention to the fact that she was still holding onto his hand, only that it felt reassuring and she didn't want to let go. She chewed on her bottom lip as her eyes scanned around the ground, hoping that the tape might just appear.
Zach (Thomas Dekker): listenifilmdeadpeople on November 4th, 2006 03:02 am (UTC)
“I can imagine her doing that,” Zach said. “She’s going to get herself into a lot of trouble when she can’t give them details… other than what the newscast said. But it’s good in a way; at least she’s taking the fall. You don’t have to worry about everybody knowing your secret. Although personally I like the fact you’re ‘Little Miss Miracle Grow’.” He smiled. “What? It’s better than being the prissy popular cheerleader.”

Moving towards the spot he had been in earlier when he’d seen the sheriff arrive, Zach placed his bag down onto the ground in the same position it had been before.

“I’m going to pace out what happened before. Time me,” he said, backing away from her and making his way across the yard again. Waiting for a few seconds by the hedge as he replayed the moment out in his mind, he rushed back to Claire’s side. “How long?”
invinciblecheer on November 5th, 2006 05:45 am (UTC)
Claire grinned as he called her Little Miss Miracle Grow, she was glad someone didn't think she was a complete freak. Zach was definitely growing on her and she was glad she had trusted him with her secret.

She looked at her watched as she kept track of the time while he tried to figure out everything, "A few minutes."

((ooc- hope that was ok- wasn't sure what all he was acting out, so if it was short then feel free to change it.))
Zach (Thomas Dekker): Wantedifilmdeadpeople on November 5th, 2006 12:34 pm (UTC)
“A few minutes?” he repeated, laughing to himself. “I can see why you never made the track team.”

He enjoyed teasing her. It was never harmful in any way. In fact the main purpose of this was to put a smile on her face. At least if she didn’t like him for anything else, he knew she appreciated his sense of humour.

“Okay, so I still think it was impossible they could have taken it,” he said, sweeping his bag up and placing it over his shoulder again. “Maybe we should go back to my place and… look.”

His face flushed a deep crimson. He’d done it again, put his foot in his mouth. She probably expected he had no intention of looking for the video, only looking at her, but it wasn’t what he meant. He did honestly want to help her, and the next best place he could think of from school was his own bedroom. Maybe he had knocked it out when he’d pulled out his homework. Maybe with his headphones on and the music blaring he had not heard it drop. Maybe his foot had kicked it under the bed or something. Maybe, just maybe, he was panicking for nothing.
invinciblecheer on November 5th, 2006 04:25 pm (UTC)
Claire laughed at his comment about making the track team, he definitely seemed like someone who would never try, but the idea of him trying made her grin.

She ran a hand through her hair as she listened to him offer the idea of looking at his house, her face turned bright red, and she chewed on her lip as she thought about it. It could be there and two eyes are better than none, should she go over? She didn't need to be anywhere and her parents wouldn't really notice that she was gone, so she looked up at him and gave him a smile, "Sure, let's go look at your place."
Zach (Thomas Dekker): bikecrouchifilmdeadpeople on November 6th, 2006 05:26 am (UTC)
He knew there was no chance he would be able to get Claire to ride his bike, so he opted to walk along the streets with her instead. Fumbling with the keys as he pulled them from his pocket, he eventually found the right one to insert into the lock and opened the front door.

“After you,” he said courteously, allowing her to walk into the house before him.

He dumped his bag onto the nearby chair in the living room, checking by the phone for messages before jogging up the stairs towards his room.

“Sorry, it’s a bit of a mess,” he said, kicking aside the clothes he had failed to put in the laundry hamper the previous night. He was about to kick them under the bed when he remembered that’s where he was meant to search first. Kneeling down he lifted the quilt and looked underneath. “We weren’t looking for smelly sneakers or Crash Palace CDs were we? Because, if that was the case, I found them.”
invinciblecheer on November 6th, 2006 01:21 pm (UTC)
Claire walked with him back to his house, she had never been there before, so this was definitely going to be an experience. Once they were inside Claire looked all around, taking it all in, it was such a nice house.

She was so used to her own mother being around in their house that she was surprised that no one else was home yet. She walked up into his room and grinned at the mess she saw, "If I had any doubts you were a boy Zach, they've all been squashed."

She moved over to his desk chair and took a seat, spinning around slightly, as she watched him, "Nope, we weren't looking for sneakers or cds. You're going to have to keep looking."
